When we first meet Tohru Honda she is living in a pup-tent in the woods. We later learn that she is an orphan who has been living with her grandfather. Her grandfather's house is being expanded, so it is temporarily not habitable. Though she could have gone with her grandfather to her aunt's house in another town, Tohru assured her grandfather that she could stay with friends locally so that she need not miss any of her schooling. But rather than impose on her friends, Tohru preferred to camp out in the woods.

Tohru's campsite, it turns out, is on land belonging to the wealthy Sohma family. The local members of the family, 27-year-old Shigure Sohma and his teenaged cousin Yuki, are a pair of bachelors who could hardly cook or keep house even to save their lives. When they discover Tohru camped out in their woods they offer her room and board at their house in exchange for cooking and housekeeping. This turns out to be a fortunate encounter, since while they are chatting in the house Tohru's tent is flattened by a landslide.

Tohru soon discovers the Sohma family's terrible secret: the family is under a curse. One aspect of the curse is that some members of the family transform into animals whenever they are under severe stress, or when they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex. The resulting animal is either a cat, or one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, horse (though the curse makes it a seahorse) goat, monkey, rooster, dog, or swine. Shigure Sohma turns into a dog. Yuki turns into a rat. Their cousin Kyo, who arrives shortly after Tohru begins living at Shigure's house, turns into a cat. The transformation reverses itself after a short time, which can lead to additional embarrassment since the clothes the transforming Sohma was wearing when in human shape will almost always have slipped from the animal form and will need to be donned anew.

Tohru is a cheerful and optimistic young woman who is not long troubled by a little bizarre magic. Indeed she is fierce in her insistence on counting her blessings and trying to see the best in every person and every situation. When Yuki Sohma, who is Tohru's classmate in high school, warns her that Sohma family policy almost always requires that outsiders who learn of the transformations have their memories of the curse erased, her only request is that she and Yuki continue to be friends even after her memories have been altered. But the head of the Sohma family, Akito, makes an exception in Tohru's case. So Tohru continues to live with Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo, and meets other members of the Sohma family who visit from time to time. The need to protect the Sohma family secret, the friction, tension and strong personalities within the Sohma family, and the quirky personalities of Tohru's two girlfriends Uo and Hana, give rise to the comic situations that are the basis of each episode's plot. Tohru becomes especially close to Yuki and Kyo, who are her classmates, and in the course of the series we learn, bit by bit, details of their history, and of Tohru's story, as well as the history of the Sohma family and its curse.

Weeeeell.. some of you have probably wondered why members of the Sohma family love each other (like Kisa and Hiro for example). Even though they share the last name, they don't have the same parents whatsoever.

Another thing people should know about the curse is that whenever a cursed member is hugged by the opposite gender, they turn into that zodiac member. (Lets say Tohru accidently hugged Yuki, then Yuki would turn into a rat right there. ^^;) But its still a mystery as to why members of the Sohma family can hug each other and nothing happens.
